Hello and welcome to the lazy tech blog! Here I will be recording my journey though my cyber security education. I aim to bring honest and relatable materials about the struggle of breaking into cyber security, the challenges I face and how I overcome them. This being my first post, and having spent a lot of time getting the website off the ground there is going to be a lot of repeated content through out the about, home, and blog pages as I introduce myself, but if you are still reading along I am glad to have you here. I talk a lot throughout my initial posts about a passion for tinkering and building that eventually drove me into studying computer science, but what exactly does that past look like? Some of my earliest memories of my developing interest in taking things apart were heavily influenced by my other interest, video games. I thought that the tools and weapons that you had in games like Gears of War’s lancer, or assassin’s creed’s hidden blade were some of the coolest things out there, but these weren’t toys that you could go out and buy, so I had to figure out how to make my own. In the case of the GoW lancer I took a NERF rifle, a toy chainsaw to the garage, a handsaw and enough tape to pack up the house and got to work. It was a little janky, but by the late evening I had my very own lancer that I could use to fight the locust enemies that I imagined were trying to storm the fort (my house). Later on, when I got my hands on the first couple assassin’s creed games I new that I wanted a hidden blade of my own as well, so similarly to the GoW idea I took to the garage, with the intent of dismantling the desk keyboard drawer to use the sliding mechanism as the base for my hidden blade. This interest in being able to build things from base parts took me onto the path of computer science where I could build projects from different tools, but it was my interest in making something that served my needs from things that already existed, that drove me towards hacking and cyber security. Currently I have graduated with my degree in Computer Science and am working as a software engineer, but every day I learn something new I think about how I can exploit it to make it behave differently. The desire to have created this blog, honestly, is a bit selfish. I want to be able to cement the things that I learn in my mind, and for me that is through explaining it to others, and by writing it down. Here I am able to do both. I hope that you dear reader are able to get valuable information from this blog, and are encouraged to push through the challenges just as I have.
